Sustainable building in Amsterdam. Inspired by the earthship concepts of Michael Reynolds

100% Zomer is asked as a strategic and business development advisor for this new business by Janneke Verwey of "Sah Projects". The building will be a vivid spot for business and leisure and will take a central place in the community. The innovative Rotterdam architecten "2012" are also part of the consortium. 2012Architecten designs products and buildings and develops strategies to facilitate the transition to a sustainable society. A shortage of fossil fuels and other natural resources is already forcing major changes in societies around the world. 2012 Architecten develops processes that empower local exchange and production, as an alternative to transporting our resources, products and components around the globe. The work of 2012Architecten shows that waste streams and limited resources are an opportunity for innovative design.

Michael Reynolds a Southwestern US architect is credited with building the first ">earthship. His wife coined the phrase because the house was self-sustaining, requiring no outside source of water nor electricity. The house just kind of sailed around, hence the name earthship. The house was built out of discarded materials such as automobile tires and aluminum cans and finished with natural adobe.

Sustainable supply chain management

100% Zomer is asked as a strategic and tactical advisor by a Dutch organisation to help them to further professionalise supply chain management. Their partners and stakeholders are situated in various African countries.

National sustainability congress 2011 Utrecht The Netherlands

Mirjam de Rijk: Leadership in sustainability means being a leader yourself starting today

The conference attracted around 700 visitors this year. Mirjam de Rijk representative of the city of Utrecht was the first speaker. She announced the ambitious plans of Utrecht. Goals of the city: in ten years time 30% Co2 reduction and 20% energy generation in the city. Mirjam stated that leadership means being a leader yourself. Do not wait for government, CEO’s or others, just start today. Mirjam urged that the focus should me much more on societal innovation. The technical innovations are already there. Key is to get people moving.

Ben Tiggelaar: leadership is “going against the flow”

Dutch public speaker Ben Tiggelaar also emphasized that communication is key in realizing sustainable goals. How do we get from “knowing” to “acting” should get the main focus today. How to involve the majority? The core of innovations is “social contamination”. Early birds act on vision and the mainstream acts on “proof of concept”. Important is to find the key person (s) that builds the bridge from innovation to mainstream. Bert called this find “the Morton”. When the Morton moves his followers do also. Morton’s are often the change makers in the organizations. The Morton can be found anywhere in the organization.

What makes people imitate behavior? “Social proof” according to Ben. He mentioned that hotel guests are most likely to reuse their towels when told that previous guests staying in their room did too. The argument that other hotel guests did this too led to far less results.

Is our behavior conscious and planned? According to various psychologists 95% of our behavior is automatic and non-conscious. So what makes people tick? Progress is fundamental to get people to act.

Professionals prefer working for organisations working on sustainability; fair career event Utrecht november 2010

Last week the first Fair Careerevent was held in Utrecht. Business and non profit organisations were present. A poll was held during the event. The main conclusion: highly educated professionals prefer working for an organisation working on sustainability:

  • 70% would like to work in the field of sustainability
  • 19% already works in sustainability
  • 71% would change his job for a job in sustainability under same conditions as their current job
  • 92% has the opion that employers should work in a more sustainable way
  • 35% agrees that sustainability is just greenwashing currently

The figures are relevant in a period that talent will be scarce in a few years time. It seems that companies that seriously embrace sustainability will attract more highly educated professionals.
